The larger town of Chalon sur Saône is an hour's drive away from the barn. The town sits along the banks of the River Saône, a large waterway still busy with barges and tourist cruise boats alike. Like Beaune, Chalon is the main town for the wines of this part of Burgundy and has fascinating medieval streets converging around St Vincent's Cathedral in the aptly named St Vincent's Square. This lively square, with its half timbered 15th & 18th century buildings & contemporary water sculpture is a perfect place to stop for lunch or refreshments during your visit to the town. In Rue du Blé, just off the square, you will find many antique & curio shops.

The lively & very entertaining 'Chalon dans les Rues' street festival celebrating music, dance & theatre takes place every July.

Chalon was the birthplace of Nicéphore Ničpce, inventor of the camera and has an excellent museum dedicated to photography. If you’re a gardening enthusiast, a pleasant afternoon is to be had visiting the Geological and Botanical Garden or the nearby Rose Gardens where 26,000 roses are displayed.

You may enjoy a picnic lunch or restaurant dinner cruise along the river to take full advantage of views of the town and surrounding countryside .

Chalon has recently introduced 'pay and ride' bycicle hire in the town centre. The perfect way enjoy a leisurely river bank ride.
