Bed and Breakfast Burgundy

Bed and Breakfast in Burgundy

Burgundy is an ideal choice for a holiday destination, comprising 4 départements; the Côte d'Or, Saône & Loire, Yonne & Nièvre.

Gently rolling countryside criss-crossed with rivers & canals, an abundance of lakes and forests, renowned vineyards, towns steeped in history, sites of cultural interest, a variety of sporting activities and good road, rail & air links all ensure that visitors to Burgundy enjoy a memorable stay.

Known mainly for its classic wines, Burgundy is also a region where good food is taken very seriously! Regional specialities include Boeuf Bourgignon from the local Charolais beef, Coq au Vin made with free range Bresse poultry - said to be the best in France, Escargots with garlic butter, fresh water fish, dry cured Morvan hams, blackcurrants for Cassis liqueur & not forgetting Dijon mustard!

If you enjoy visiting châteaux there are almost 200 splendid examples of medieval, renaissance & fortified châteaux in Burgundy. The nearest are the Château de Sully, Château de La Rochepot & the Château de Marguerite de Bourgogne at Couches. All are well worth a visit. In the wine areas many of the vineyard châteaux are open to the public.

Three Unesco World Heritage sites are to be found in the region. The hilltop town of Vézelay & its basilica where the remains of St Mary-Madeleine are held & a departure point for the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela; the medieval monastery town of La Charité-sur-Loire & the Cistercian abbey of Fontenay founded in 1118 & which today gives a fascinating insight into the life of monks during that period.

Burgundy is world famous for its wine production. Well known Grand Cru vineyards are just a 40 minute drive away. Mercurey, Meursault, Pommard, Santonnay, Givry, Puligny Montrachet to name but a few are waiting for you. Further afield are the Premier Cru vineyards including Nuits St Georges, Clos de Vougeot and Gevrey-Chambertin in the neighbouring department of the Côte d'Or.

An enjoyable way of visiting the vineyards is to follow a recommended self drive tour along one of the 'route des vins'. These routes take you through a variety of picturesque villages and wine growing areas with points of historical interest to note along the way.

Guided wine tasting tours are also available by specialist companies.
