Bed and Breakfast near Autun, Burgundy
Our nearest town is the medieval town of Autun. A fascinating town rich in Roman & medieval history. Originally named Augustosunum after the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus who founded the settlement in the 1st century AD.
Numerous archaeological Roman remains are to be found around the town including an amphitheatre, two of the original town entry gates of Porte St André & Porte d'Arroux as well as part of the town walls.
The town's ramparts are said to be one of the longest examples of its type still in place.
Every summer the amphitheatre stages a spectacular son et lumière charting the history of the town.
The medieval part of the town is dominated by the magnificent 12th century St Lazare cathedral whose tympanum is recognised as one of the finest examples of Romanesque art. The paved cathedral quarter is dotted by delightful 16th & 17th century buildings that now house several restaurants & cafés. The nearby Rolin museum is well worth a visit where exhibits include Roman & medieval artefacts as well as 18th century works of art.
The town centre is dominated by the impressive 18th century Hôtel de Ville & Theâtre on the main square. Brasseries & cafés on the square provide the perfect place for a pleasant al fresco lunch. On Wednesdays & Fridays, a busy market is held here.
The nearby pedestrian streets are home to a variety of shops. For divine cakes & pastries look at the Patisserie St Saulge & just across the way, the very tempting chocolaterie!
