Hiking / Walking

There is a huge choice of hiking in central Burgundy on set 'Grand Randonnée' routes, many of which are part of the extensive Voies Celtes trails in the Morvan National Park. Whatever your level of fitness, choose from a full or half day hike in the hills, a walk along the lanes & fields of local countryside or a pleasant stroll around the lake in Autun.

History

Archaeological sites, Roman amphitheatres, Romanesque churches, medieval & renaissance architecture, museums, sites of WW2 Resistance activity. There is a wealth of fascinating history for you to discover in Burgundy.

 

Cycling

Whether you're a 'roadie', mountain biker or occasional cyclist, the area provides you with a variety of cycle routes around the roads & lanes of the area. Cycling is a passion in France and one of the 2007 Tour de France stage finishes took place in Autun. We will be happy to suggest appropriate routes for you whether you want a challenging hill climb or a gentle canal-side afternoon ride.

In recent years Burgundy has developed an excellent network of Voie Verte cycle routes on disused rail tracks that allow cyclists to enjoy riding at a more leisurely pace on a smooth surface away from traffic. Alternatively spend a pleasant afternoon cycling through some of the picturesque vineyards of the area.

Hot Air Balloon Flights

A wonderful way of seeing the beauty of Burgundy is to take a balloon ride. Several companies provide flights [weather conditions permitting] where you can discover a different perspective of the landscape of the region as you soar over towns, villages and vineyards.

Fishing

Fishing is a very popular sport in Burgundy with a vast network of canals, rivers & lakes. Trout, pike, perch & tench being the commonest fish in the region. The fishing season runs from March to September & a 2 week fishing licence can be obtained locally.

 

 

 

 

 

Water sports

There is an excellent water sports complex at the Lac de Vallon in Autun, with instruction if needed, which is surrounded by a jogging/walking track. Pedalos, rowing boats, wind surfers or dinghies are all available for hire with instruction if it is needed.
This is also the location of an excellent indoor/outdoor swimming pool with a spa area & sunbathing deck that overlooks the lake & surrounding countryside.

 

 

 

 

Golf

If you enjoy a round of golf, nearby Autun has an excellent 9 hole municipal golf course. A weekly golf pass is available that allows you to play at several courses in the region.

 

 

Painting

You will be spoiled for choice of subject matter here. Beautiful landscapes, sunsets, vineyards, châteaux, historical sites, narrow winding streets of nearby towns together with an intensity of light & colour make this a perfect location for any artist.
